Blinking fast didn’t change the view in front of me. It was really him. A million things ran through my head. What the fuck was he doing up there? Wasn’t he supposed to be in the dungeon?

My heart beat like crazy in my ears.

“Get down,” Hammer whispered.

It took me a second to understand what the words meant, and before I could get down on my knees, he jumped forward and crashed against the vampire on my left. The others ran after him, forgot all about me. The chains that held my hands together behind my back were thick. I tried to break free from them, but the goddamn knife was still in my back, possibly touching my backbone because the pain was incredible.

Five against one, Hammer was faster than ever as he fought the vampires. He had no weapons—just his hands and teeth. I kept expecting his face to change, for him to become someone else, but he didn’t.

When one of them threw him back, he fell on his ass right next to me.

“Gun,” I said, looking at my vest, but before he could reach for it, two vampires jumped him. He got a few hits and kicks on his face, but that didn’t stop him. He threw both of them back and managed to grab my gun just as another jumped on his back with his arms around Hammer’s neck.

He pushed back and hit the wall before he shot the vampire in the head.

Four more left.

“My hands!” I called while he fought. If he could just remove the knife from my back, I could break the chains and help him.

But one of the vampires knocked the gun from his hand, just as someone pushed the knife on my back deeper.

It was so sudden that I screamed with all I had. The pain suffocated me. Air no longer reached my lungs.

“Hello, little sister,” someone whispered in my ear. I couldn’t move my neck so I couldn’t see her face. She grabbed me by my hair and pulled me to my feet before she walked in front of me.

Seeing her face was like watching my house burn down all over again. It was her. Harley.

She’d changed, but her eyes were still the same. The shadow of her human self still there. It was really her. And she was a vampire.

“Missed me?” she said, grinning like this was the happiest night of her life.

“Ha—Ha…” I couldn’t speak.

Hammer was still fighting off the four vampires. Without the gun, there wasn’t much he could do.

What the hell was I doing? I need to move!

And I did move, but only when Harley actually put me on her shoulder and walked away.

“Morta!” Hammer called, but he was too far away now. He ran after me, but the vampires weren’t about to make it easy for him. They grabbed him from behind and threw him against the wall.

Run, I said to him with my eyes. He needed to run, get away from there. It didn’t matter that they’d caught me.
